The special episode forms part of METRO FM's 40th anniversary celebrations under the campaign theme '#METROFM40 #TheSoundOfUs'. It offers audiences an opportunity to revisit the people, experiences and defining moments that have contributed to the station’s enduring legacy, says the station.
"As METRO FM celebrates 40 years, we are reflecting on the voices, moments and relationships that have shaped our journey and made the station such an important part of South Africa's cultural landscape. Azania Mosaka's contribution to METRO FM is particularly significant. She broke barriers, redefined what was possible for women in commercial radio and built a meaningful connection with listeners. This special Off-Air Podcast allows us to revisit that legacy in her own words, while celebrating the people who have helped shape the sound of METRO FM over four decades," says Siyanda Fikelephi, METRO FM Business Manager.
Few broadcasters have left a mark on METRO FM quite like Mosaka. Her journey with the station began in 2001, when she joined as a producer for The Glen Lewis Show. Her talent, distinctive on-air presence and connection with listeners soon saw her move into presenting, where she would go on to break barriers and establish herself as one of the most recognisable voices in South African radio, adds the station.
In 2003, Mosaka made history when she took over the 15:00 to 18:00 drive-time slot, becoming the first woman to host a drive-time show on a South African commercial radio station. This landmark achievement helped challenge traditional industry norms and opened new possibilities for women in broadcasting.
Her influence continued through flagship METRO FM programmes, including Route 326, Sounds of Breakfast and the mid-morning show Total Bliss. The latter became a listener favourite, with interactive segments such as Office Powerplay creating memorable shared experiences for audiences at work and beyond, says the station.
Mosaka's career reflects the evolving role of women in radio, the power of authentic audience connection and the importance of creating spaces where listeners feel represented, entertained and heard.
The anniversary conversation revisits these defining chapters of her career, offering a personal reflection on the milestones that shaped her time at METRO FM and the broader evolution of South African radio, adds the station.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Mosaka also recently returned to the station as a special guest on Best Mornings, reconnecting with the METRO FM family and the audiences who have followed her journey over the years.
The METRO FM Off-Air Podcast creates space for conversations that extend beyond the broadcast, bringing audiences closer to the personalities, stories and experiences behind the voices they know and love. Through this anniversary series, the station celebrates not only its history but also the people who have helped define its sound and strengthen its relationship with generations of listeners, says the station.
As METRO FM marks four decades on air, the special episode with Mosaka is a reminder that the station's legacy is built on more than music and memorable programmes. It is built on the voices that have challenged convention, shaped conversations and become part of the everyday lives of South Africans.
